Fall Conference - General Information

Building Leaders (2007-2008)

Print

Welcome to another school year and another exciting year for Wyoming FBLA.  In addition to attending NLC, the State Officer team met on two different occasions this summer to plan out this year’s activities.  I hope that your members are anxious to join the state officer team on an exciting leadership adventure this year.  One of our many accomplishments this summer was to choose the theme for the 2007-2008 school year.  It is Wyoming FBLA:  Building Leaders.

By now, you should have received a new Chapter Management Handbook.  If you have not received this, please contact Lisa Frye-Smothers at the National Center (1-800FBLAWIN).  She will have one sent to you.  The CMH updates contain important information about competitive events updates, topics, etc.  Please be sure to go over this information with your members.

Fall Leadership Conference

It’s time to start making plans for this year’s Fall Leadership Conference, which will be held on October 2.  This year’s conference will be held at the Best Western Ramkota in Casper.   A tentative agenda for our state FLC is included in this mailing.

The State Officer team is busy planning another outstanding conference and we hope you’ll encourage all of your members to take advantage of this opportunity.  The day will kick off with an opening session featuring Brad Barton, an outstanding magician and motivational speaker.  Throughout the day, members will have an opportunity to participate in competitive events practice sessions and pick up many new ideas about creating an active chapter while improving their personal leadership skills.

Rooms

The Best Western Ramkota has a small block of rooms reserved for the night of October 1.  Rooms are $65 per night and will be held until September 18.  Please make your reservations as soon as possible to assure that you will get the rooms of your choice.  Be sure to mention this conference when you call.  The number at the Best Western Ramkota is 307-266-6000.

Registration

Registration will be $20 per person.  The price of registration will include lunch and a cookie break.  The registration fee also helps cover the cost of printing, testing supplies, entertainment, and award certificates.  We will award certificates to the top four competitors in each event at the closing session.
Any new chapter will be offered ½ price registration for FLC.  If you know of anyone who is planning to start a new chapter, please forward this information to them with a CC to me.

In order to save money on printing and postage, registration will be processed via e-mail or on the FBLA Website at www.wyfbla.org.  All registration documents are in Word so that you should be able to download them, add your information, save them and send the necessary paper work back to me.  The RECEIPT deadline for registration is September 24.  Registration materials should be e-mailed to me on or before September 24.

Competitive Events

Once again, we will be offering members the opportunity to take practice tests at FLC.  Due to time limitations, we won’t be having practice events in any of the performance events.  We will use a similar format for practice tests this year.  If you were not a part of the conference last year, I will try to explain it.  We will be offering several objective tests in a room at any given time.  Tests will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.  Students will be allowed to take more than one test in a testing session.  It will not be necessary to pre-register for the tests.  Please remind all of your members to bring a sharpened No. 2 pencil with them to testing sessions.

Test Proctors/Workshop Monitors Needed

In order to make this conference a success, we will need your help.  We will be asking advisers to help out as test proctors, workshop monitors, etc.  If you are bringing parents or guests who would be willing to help out with any of the above, please let me know.  We would welcome their help.

Dress Code

Members are asked to be in business attire for the conference.  Please go over the dress code with your students prior to attending.

Conference T-Shirt

Members may purchase a Wyoming FBLA t-shirt for $10 if they wish.  Although they won’t be able to wear it at this conference, it will be the same for SLC and may be worn by members participating in Khakis for Kids.  A copy of the t-shirt design will be snail-mailed to you soon so that we can avoid any miscommunication as a result of computers not opening attachments.

FBLA LEADS!

As you may recall from last year, local officer training has been named LEADS (Local Executives Achieving Dynamic Success!).  This year, the following schools have volunteered to host LEADS:  Cheyenne Central/East, Wheatland, Buffalo, Rocky Mountain or Cody.  Since we have had such a large turnout in the Southeast Quadrant (Lingle had 60 in attendance last year), it was suggested that we offer two conferences in the Southeast quadrant.  Dates will be a Monday or a Tuesday between October 15 and November 13.

Advisers who offered to host LEADS will be receiving more information as to available dates.

Important Reminder about Membership Dues

All membership dues (including Wyoming and National dues) are paid to the National Center.  Once the National Center collects your dues, they will forward the state portion to me.  PLEASE do not attempt to process your dues through me!

Anyone wishing to compete at SLC or run for a State Office must meet the January 31 deadline for payment of membership dues.

Membership Has Its Privileges

This year, we are offering a small gift to members who have paid their dues by October 2.  Any members who have paid their state and national dues to you (they don’t necessarily have to be received by the National Center) is eligible for this gift at FLC.  When you pick up your registration materials, you will let us know how many paid members you have and receive your gifts to share with your members.
